Momentum Developer Conference

Piccoli system integrator, investono. E crescono!

Lexmark Acquires Acuo Technologies

Lexmark Acquires Acuo Technologies.

  • Acuo Technologies is a leader in the vendor neutral archive software segment that resides within the high growth enterprise clinical management software and services market for the medical imaging industry
  • Lexmark’s Perceptive Software becomes the only vendor to own this technology and offer a solution that drives better patient care, an enhanced clinician experience and cost savings through a single, enterprise-wide and content-based medical record that is accessible via any electronic medical record (EMR) system
  • Acquisition continues to showcase Lexmark’s transition to being a key solutions provider to enterprise-sized businesses and organizations across the globe
  • Represents continuation of Lexmark’s stated capital allocation framework

Lexington, Ky., Jan. 2, 2013 – Lexmark International, Inc. (NYSE: LXK) today announced the acquisition of Acuo Technologies, LLC, a recognized leader in high performance software and services for clinical content management, data migration and vendor neutral archives (VNA), for a cash purchase price of approximately $45 million. Acuo Technologies will become a part of Perceptive Software, a Lexmark company.

Acuo Technologies, when combined with Lexmark’s Perceptive Software healthcare software solutions, will enable customers to deploy a single, enterprise-wide access platform for clinical content via any electronic medical record (EMR) system.

Acuo Technologies’ Universal Clinical Platform (UCP) is a vendor neutral foundation that drives better care delivery through a patient-centric approach by consolidating medical images.

Acuo Technologies’ offerings include a single integration point for all medical imaging assets, lowering costs and risks through the UCP’s ability to work with different systems – enabling flexibility and efficiency across users and departments.

Many national governments, university medical centers, and urban and regional acute care centers and companies use Acuo Technologies’ software and services, primarily in North America and Europe.

Together, Perceptive Software and Acuo Technologies will offer a unique set of technologies to the healthcare sector—enterprise content management (ECM), VNA with clinical content viewing, and database conversion—that combine to manage the entire range of content within the healthcare enterprise. With this acquisition, Perceptive Software becomes the only vendor to own this technology in order to provide this powerful healthcare solution, driving better patient care, an enhanced clinician experience and cost savings through a single, enterprise-wide and content-based medical record that is accessible via any EMR system.

Lexmark retains a strong liquidity position with a long history of cash generation. This acquisition illustrates Lexmark’s consistent execution of the company’s stated capital allocation framework. Lexmark’s capital allocation framework is to pursue acquisitions
that support growth and increase software and solutions capabilities, while returning more than 50 percent of free cash flow to shareholders, on average, through quarterly dividends and share repurchases. Since mid-2011, Lexmark has returned to shareholders more than $500 million in the form of dividends and share repurchases.

Supporting Quotes:
“With the acquisition of Acuo Technologies, Lexmark is further strengthening and differentiating our industry-leading healthcare offerings as the healthcare IT market continues to expand at a rapid pace,” said Paul Rooke, Lexmark’s chairman and chief executive officer. “The four acquisitions we’ve completed in 2012 showcase Lexmark’s transition to being a key solutions provider to enterprise-sized businesses and organizations across the globe.”

“Perceptive Software’s rich process and content solution combined with Acuo Technologies’ Universal Clinical Platform will provide users a single, enterprise-wide view of all patient medical information from within the EMR system,” said Scott Coons, Perceptive Software president and chief executive officer and Lexmark vice president. “Physicians will have immediate access to all patient information—from prescriptions to x-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans and more—from directly within the EMR, regardless of the department in which it was conducted or the technology used to create and store it.”This data is then presented in the context of the patient, so when the physician pulls up a patient record in the EMR, all clinical content living outside that record is presented,” added Coons. “This immediate, broad view of the patient drives both efficiencies and better patient care. Presenting this powerful content-based medical record in one solution will be unique to the market.”

“Combining Acuo Technologies’ clinical content solutions with Perceptive Software’s content and process expertise allows us to offer healthcare customers more compelling end-to-end solutions that integrate and manage both medical image and document-centric patient information, all integrated with the EMR,” said Jeff Timbrook, Acuo Technologies chief executive officer. “We look forward to presenting this broad offering to existing Acuo Technologies, Perceptive Software and Lexmark healthcare customers.”

EMC Acquires IT Performance Management Leader Watch4net

News Summary:

  • EMC acquires performance management software expert Watch4Net Solutions Inc. in an all-cash transaction.
  • An EMC partner for more than seven years, Watch4net has worked closely with EMC to deliver proven, enterprise and carrier-class solutions to meet customers’ IT management needs. Watch4net’s flagship APG solution is tightly integrated with EMC IT Operations Intelligence Suite.
  • The addition of Watch4net into the EMC portfolio rounds out EMC’s world-class IT management solution to address customers’ most critical IT management needs across their physical and virtual IT environments.

Full Story:

EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC) today announced that it has acquired Montreal-based Watch4net, a privately-held provider of enterprise and carrier-class performance management software that provides real-time, historical and projected visibility into network, data center and cloud infrastructure performance. The all-cash transaction is not expected to have a material impact to EMC GAAP or non-GAAP EPS for the full 2012 fiscal year.

As customers continue virtualizing data centers on their journey to cloud computing, two fundamental requirements have emerged:

  • Availability management, to determine if components are functioning and available
  • Performance management, to track any system or component degradation, plot trending and intervene as needed

Through its EMC IT Operations Intelligence Suite, EMC has delivered one of the industry’s premier availability management solutions for physical and virtual storage, networks and compute resources. Complementing this, EMC is now offering Watch4net’s rich set of performance management capabilities.

Watch4net has worked closely with EMC over the last seven years to deliver proven, enterprise and carrier-class solutions to meet customers’ IT management needs. Already tightly integrated with IT Operations Intelligence Suite today, Watch4net leverages EMC’s topology awareness, instrumentation and management console.

EMC continues to expand on one of the industry’s most comprehensive IT management portfolios for enterprises and service providers. This portfolio not only includes IT infrastructure management via the IT Operations Intelligence Suite, EMC Unified Infrastructure Manager (UIM) for managing VCE Vblock platforms and Watch4net, but also includes tight alignment with IT Service Level Management via VMware and Security Management and Compliance via RSA. This broad set of capabilities is critical to address customers’ diverse management requirements as they continue their journey to cloud computing and look to deliver IT-as-a-Service.

According to a recent Enterprise Management Associates report, the changes brought forth by the dual disruptive trends of server virtualization and cloud services “are nothing less than revolutionary to many IT organizations, spawning re-assessments of management tools, technologies, and practices in order to achieve cross-domain alignment to the new service-oriented mandate.” The report, Network Management and the Responsible, Virtualized Cloud (February 2011), indicates that most organizations adopting server virtualization and cloud services are seeing direct impacts across multiple management disciplines and management tools as a result.

Michel Foix, Watch4net CEO, and the Watch4net team will report to Jay Mastaj, Senior Vice President and General Manager, EMC Infrastructure Management Group.

EMC Executive Quote:

Jay Mastaj, Senior Vice President and General Manager, EMC Infrastructure Management Group

“Today’s rapidly-growing and dynamic IT infrastructures carry an ever-looming mandate to stay on top of absolutely everything happening within them. Regardless of where customers are along their journey to cloud computing, insight into every aspect of IT performance and the ability to manage it without growing staff and with increasing granularity, are no longer optional. By bringing Watch4net into the EMC portfolio and roadmap, EMC rounds out its world-class IT management solution to address customers’ most critical IT management needs across their physical and virtual IT environments.”

Watch4net Executive Quote:

Michel Foix, Chief Executive Officer, Watch4net

“IT availability and performance management are ever-changing, and the advent of cloud computing has increased the need for an end-to-end, seamless solution. Watch4net and EMC have worked together for more than seven years on a unified mission. We are extremely proud to be joining the EMC family and look forward to the continued development and market adoption of our flagship product suite, APG.”

IBM Advances Big Data Analytics with Acquisition of Vivisimo

IBM two weeks ago announced a definitive agreement to acquire Vivisimo, a leading provider of federated discovery and navigation software that helps organizations access and analyze big data across the enterprise. Vivisimo is a privately held company based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Vivisimo software excels in capturing and delivering quality information across the broadest range of data sources, no matter what format it is, or where it resides. The software automates the discovery of data and helps employees navigate it with a single view across the enterprise, providing valuable insights that drive better decision-making for solving all operational challenges.

This news accelerates IBM’s big data analytics initiatives with advanced federated capabilities allowing organizations to access, navigate, and analyze the full variety, velocity and volume of structured and unstructured data without having to move it.

The combination of IBM’s big data analytics capabilities with Vivisimo software will further IBM’s efforts to automate the flow of data into business analytics applications, helping clients better understand consumer behavior, manage customer churn and network performance, detect fraud in real-time, and perform data-intensive marketing campaigns.

“Navigating big data to uncover the right information is a key challenge for all industries,” said Arvind Krishna, general manager, Information Management, IBM Software Group. “The winners in the era of big data will be those who unlock their information assets to drive innovation, make real-time decisions, and gain actionable insights to be more competitive.”

“Businesses need a faster and more accurate way to discover and navigate big data for analysis” said John Kealey, Chief Executive Officer, Vivisimo. “As part of IBM, we can bring clients the quickest and most accurate access to information necessary to drive growth initiatives that increase customer satisfaction, streamline processes, and boost sales.”

IBM estimates 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are created every day from a variety of sources including sensors, social media, and billions of mobile devices around the world, making it difficult for businesses to navigate and analyze it to improve competitiveness, efficiency, and profitability. IDC estimates the market for big data technology and services will grow at an annual rate of nearly 40 percent to reach $16.9 billion by 2015.

Vivisimo brings over a decade of experience and innovation in data navigation and visualization technologies for both structured and unstructured data, making it easier for business users to get value from all of their data and content. Vivisimo’s ability to index and search data across multiple repositories is a distinguishing capability, applicable to all industries and clients.

Vivisimo has more than 140 customers in industries such as government, life sciences, manufacturing, electronics, consumer goods and financial services. Clients include Airbus, U.S. Air Force, Social Security Administration, Defense Intelligence Agency, U.S. Navy, Procter & Gamble, Bupa, and LexisNexis among others. Upon the closing of the acquisition, approximately 120 Vivisimo employees will join IBM’s Software Group. IBM will incorporate Vivisimo technology into its big data platform.

IBM Expands Partner Ecosystem for Big Data Platform

IBM is unique in having developed an enterprise big data platform that allows clients to manage, access, and gain intelligence on the full variety, velocity and volume of structured and unstructured data.

IBM’s big data platform is based on open source Apache Hadoop. The platform makes it easier for data-intensive applications to manage and analyze petabytes of big data by providing clients with an integrated approach to analytics, helping them turn information into insights for improved business outcomes.

The platform provides clients with the industry’s broadest array of advanced business analytics, Hadoop-based analytics, stream computing, data warehousing, integration, visualization, systems management, governance, and consulting services.

IBM’s approach to big data challenges is differentiated as it blends traditional data management technologies that are well suited for structured, repeatable tasks, together with complementary new technologies that address speed and flexibility, and are ideal for data exploration, discovery and unstructured analysis.

IBM is expanding its big data platform to run on other distributions of Hadoop, beginning with Cloudera. Cloudera is a top contributor to the Hadoop development community, and an early provider of Hadoop-based systems to clients across a broad range of industries including financial services, government, telecommunications, media, retail, energy and healthcare. As a result, Cloudera Hadoop clients can now take advantage of IBM’s big data platform to perform complex analytics and build a new generation of software applications.

IBM has the industry’s broadest portfolio of big data capabilities with software, hardware, services, and innovations developed by IBM Research such as the Watson system. Over 100 IBM Business Partners have adopted IBM’s big data platform, bringing a new class of solutions to market and extending the reach of IBM analytics offerings for clients.
